Post-Viraal Vermoeidheidssyndroom (PVVS) genoemd doordat de ziekte vaak ontstaat na een virale infectie. Ook wordt het Chronisch Vermoeidheid Immuun Disfunctie Syndroom (CVIDS) genoemd, maar deze term wordt in Nederland bijna niet gebruikt. Als laatste is ook de naam Systemic Exertion Intolerance Disease (SEID) voorgesteld door het US Institute of Medicine.
